Not getting notification full-screen alerts

I just got an apple watch 5 for Christmas and love it. Today though it randomly stopped or showing notifications. I get the haptic and the red dot at the top and when I scroll down I can see the notification, but my screen doesn't change/alert when I get a message or email or any other notification like it's supposed to. As in the big Message or Gmail or Words with Friends icon doesn't take up the screen when I raise my wrist after feeling the haptic. I googled but didn't see anything with my exact issue. Everything was for not getting notifications at all, and I am getting notifications, just not the full screen alerts. I tried restarting my watch but no luck. Anyone have an answer?
