Problem with the arc when the thunderbolt is connected to the tv

I have a hisense tv that is compatible with Arc, and I use my Phillips sound bar for this as both are compatible. I set everything up on the tv to allow the arc and it all works fine, the tv can detect that I’m using arc and the fact it’s a Phillips sound bar and when I turn the volume up on the sound bar it goes up on the tv, when I turn my tv off the sound bar turns off and same goes when I switch it on, i recently brought a HDMI adapter for my 2012 MacBook Pro and I plug it into the tv what ever I see on my Mac it’s on the tv which is great, but the problem is when I connect the HDMI cable to my adapter to get picture across from my Mac to the tv the arc seems to stop working and my tv can’t detect it, I turn the tv off and the sound bar stays on and vice verser I can’t get any sound from the soundbar using the arc whilst it’s plugged in despite changing my settings on the tv to send an arc output first. And if I unplug the HDMI cable from the MacBook the tv can detect it and all works fine. It’s only when I connect my HDMI cable to my Mac it can’t detect it and I can’t get any sound.

I need answers and would appreciate the help

thanks.

Hey there Joshua879,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand you’re having issues using the audio-return channel on your TV when your Mac is connected to it via HDMI. I’ll be happy to help with this.

Do you have another HDMI adapter you can test this with? This could isolate the issue and help us determine where the issue is originating from. It not, try connecting your Mac to your TV using another HDMI port or cable and if your TV has any firmware updates available, install those and try again. Also, if you have another TV you can test this on, try to further isolate this.

Also, go through the steps under ‘If your HDMI device isn't receiving audio from your Mac’ from this article for steps that may help:

Connect to HDMI from your Mac

Look at the info under ‘Check whether you can play audio from your Mac on your TV’ from the following article as well for other steps that may help:

Use your TV as a display with Mac

Let me know if this helps.
