My email messages in Mail stopped displaying the email content on my iMac so I searched the community and found a fix that involved some work inside Mail Preferences but now when I attempt to launch the Preferences, the Mail app crashes.
I have an iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017), running macOS Mojave Version 10.14.6

Just an update ... none of the suggestions above were able to resolve my issue and other native OS apps started misbehaving like my Calendar, iMessage etc.
So I had to create a bootable USB install disk of Mojave and reinstall the operating system. That fixed it even though it was a hassle. Thanks for the help.

One last thing you can try is creating a new user account. Log out of your existing account, and then, log back in with the new account. Then try the Mail app.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried both potential solutions from the article you sent above and neither worked.
First I closed Mail, deleted the envelope index, relaunched it and same problem.
cd ~/Library/Mail/V6/MailData
rm -rf Envelope\ Index*
rm -rf ExternalUpdates.storedata*
Secondly I tried deleting the IMAP folder and relaunching Mail but the problem persists. The second step from this one require removing and restoring the account, but again I can't get to my Mail Preferences without it crashing so I'm unable to try this.
Any other thoughts?

Unfortunately Mail is still crashing. I have tried booting in Safe Mode and accessing Mail and it continues to crash. I also tried deleting the "com.apple.mail" folder insdie Library>Containers. I disabled all my email accounts, rebooted, launched Mail, reconnected to iCloud and it crashed.
What will access to Mail do for me if I create a new user account? Right now I have zero icloud access. I can't even get to any data in the cloud from this iMac due to this message "Preferences Error - There was an error in iCloud preferences). I feel like i've taken two steps back now.
It's just a suggestion in case the issue is related to your user account. If you don't want to give it a go, then your next step would be to contact Apple Support directly by clicking on the Contact Support link at the upper-righthand side of this web page.
I wasn't able to try the fix because Preferences will not open without crashing.
The fix was to select the Mail account, hit the minus to delete it ... then to restore it from the cloud.

Note that for macOS Mojave's Mail app will have its folders located in the "V6" sub-folder.
