Trying to set up a movie for kids to watch New Years Eve...

Tested with an iPhone 10s and with a new iPad Pro...

Screen mirroring works:

I can watch movies on amazon prime, Netflix, web browser... however, I can’t stream the movies I own through iTunes...

Apple products are literally the only thing not currently working through the Apple TV...

I’ve checked network connections and made sure each device is updated...

What is your model Apple TV? Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support

You should be able to load your iTunes Store movie directly on the Apple TV, without needing your iOS device.

If you can’t play the movie directly on the Apple TV box, then AirPlay may fail for the same reason.

Home Sharing is for content on local network computers. It doesn’t apply between Apple TV and iOS devices. AirPlay is not Home Sharing.

Try rebooting the Apple TV box. Try rebooting the router too.

With the latest TVOS it has been made easier to have multiple users and switch between accounts. That can be much more seamless then tying up a device and relying on airplay. That is why I was asking, but if you’d stick to using airplay that is totally your choice.

Other things working does not alone verify the network, further investigation would need to occur

If the Apple TV is using wifi then try it on Ethernet

To see a current status of the network run a diagnostic report from your computer using istumbler (MAC), netstumbler (PC) or similar. This will show values for signal strength, noise and nearby networks

You can also take the unit to another network or to Apple to verify

AirPlay has a setting to use the cloud version instead of a downloaded version. I’m thinking, that may not work if the settings on the Apple TV differs from the sending device, i.e. when the other Apple ID shouldn’t have access to a certain movie title. Perhaps AirPlaying this movie works better after changing that setting?

I don’t have a computer, just iOS devices. But home sharing is turned on for the Apple TV.

...and yes, my iOS devices are on the same network

(I am able to mirror my iOS devices to the TV, via the Apple TV, but I get authenticating > loading > “ready to play in 1 minute” message when I try to play movies purchased in iTunes).

Each device has been rebooted and checked for updates...

additionally, I realize what homesharing is used for, I just wanted to address rkaufmann87 without arguing about what homesharing does...

...there are 4 different Apple IDs that share this device, and mine isn’t signed into this AppleTV... so playing directly on the AppleTV isn’t an option (I know I can family share content, and intentionally don’t have that set up... because this feature worked until just now...)

Yes, there’s a reason my Apple ID isn’t the primary for this AppleTV. Once or twice, switching back and forth isn’t a big deal... but I need to resolve this.

I had set all of our devices so they’re not connecting. Checked for updates on the AppleTV... Watched video (not previously downloaded) in Netflix/Disney+/YouTube/, etc. for the Apple TV... Streamed music, surfed the iTunes Store... streamed video via AppleTV+.

Edit: yes. The file is fully downloaded to the devices...
