Transfer iMovie files to Photos

Hello,

I’d like to shift several dozen home movies out of iMovie into Photos, which I prefer to use. How do I do this? And can I do so without losing the metadata? I’m on a 2019 iMac using all current software. Thanks.

Hello, Moretown!

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities!

If I'm understanding your post correctly, you want to move some home movies from iMovie to Photos and you're wondering how you can do this while keeping the metadata for these movies intact.

Take a look at this article called Move iMovie Theater content to iCloud Photos and follow these steps:

"Move videos to iCloud Photos on Mac

  1. In iMovie, choose Window > Go to Theater.
  2. Click a video to select it, then click the Share button , then choose File.
  3. Click the Resolution pop-up menu and choose the highest resolution available. Set the other share options, then click Next.
  4. Choose a location on your Mac to save the video, like the Desktop, then click Save.
  5. Open Photos.
  6. Find the saved video file on your Mac, then drag it into Photos.
  7. Repeat for every video you want to copy to iCloud Photos.

If you don't use iCloud Photos

If you don't use iCloud Photos, save the videos as files as described above, then move them to your Photos library. You can also copy the video files to a folder on your Mac, to an external drive, or to third-party cloud storage locations like Box. To watch your videos on your Apple TV, you can AirPlay from iPhone, iPad, or Mac."

I hope this information helps you!

Cheers.
