I currently own an iphone xs max and the screen is smashed and lcd has all gone and no touch is working. Im trying to recover my photos but because the touch screen isnt working i can't press trust device when plugged into my computer. Is there anyway around this to recover my photos? have a lot of photos i need to get off it, and dont think any were backed up with icloud.

Then they are gone forever. The only possibility is Apple can usually replace the screen without erasing the phone.
Without a backup, to my knowledge - no. If I were you I would take it in to an Apple store and see if they have a way to help.

That's unfortunate. I hope Apple can replace the screen without wiping your phone. I hope you realize now that backups are really important if you don't want to lose memories like photos. After the fact as you are seeing is the wrong time to ask about preserving important data.
