Deactivating old phone after buying a new iPhone with ATT service through apple.com

I recently purchased an iPhone through apple.com and had it activated (by Apple) with my old number with ATT service. Is there anything I have to do to deactivate my old phone or does Apple automatically deactivate it when the new phone is configured? Or maybe it doesn't even have to be deactivated?
