The free year is 'Apple TV+' - this is a streaming channel containing only series made by Apple: at the moment there isn't a large selection but it will increase.
Other services such as iTunes or Netflix are paid for either on a subscription or pay-per-view method and are not part of the Apple TV+ free year.

Hi roger thanks for the reply . I can see there are series and some film on the Apple TV app but u can only get access to certain series . Should I be able to watch everything that is on there or will I only be able to watch a handful of series this is what I’m not fully grasping as I thought I would be able to watch everything but instead I only have a few options of what I can watch for free and everything else I have to pay for.
thank you for your help sorry for the long reply.
Anything not part of 'Apple TV+', the subscription service, has to be paid for either as a subscription, as with Netflix, or on a pay per view basis as on iTunes. There are a few apps offering free movies but these are mostly very old B-movies and often in appalling quality so unless that's a specific interest of yours they aren't worth bothering with.
As stated the Apple TV + service contains Apple original content. Currently there are 10 series and 2 movies. Content is regularly added. The subscription does not entitle you to content from the iTunes store, which is 3rd party and done through purchase or rental.
