Missing contacts

out of the blue without upgrading the ios or anything, I am missing almost all my contacts. the phone was synced to icloud, but when i tried to get the contacts from icloud on my laptop, the contacts are missing as well. how can i get my contacts back? thank you

iPhone 7, iOS 12

Contacts can be a little tricky, let me explain.


Contacts are normally saved to an account not to a device.


I know you view them from a device but unless you specifically turned them on to save to device they are saved in an account, iCloud, Gmail, Outlook . . . Even social media apps. 


Make sure you are signed into all of your accounts


Add an email account to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch


If they are still not syncing


If your iCloud Contacts, Calendars, or Reminders won’t sync


Make sure all of the accounts have contacts turned on
