For older Macs, the USB-3 version works up to and including 100 baseT, which's is faster than most Wi-Fi and faster than the Router connection to the Internet.


If you need access to local file servers at faster speeds, there is a Thunderbolt-1 or 2 to Gigabit Ethernet version for the same price. Some Routers support gigabit link speeds, but most do not support the Jumbo frames required for true high-volume file transfers.
