generate a new Recovery Key

I am trying to use my original iPad and it is asking for me to update my password which i have done but i do not have a clue what the recovery key would be and i can't figure out how to recreate a new one.

That sounds like you were or are using the older Apple 2 step verification system with the AppleID on that device.

If you can, try to create a new recovery key - see this document about how to do that - If you can't sign in with two-step verification using your Apple ID - Apple Support
