But that's not how it works. Each and every song on your iPod should appear in both the Genres and the Albums lists, by default. There is no need to transfer from one to the other. In fact, that's not possible.

The only reason why a song would appear in Genres, but not in Albums would be because the album title is not filled in for that song.

  • But if you bought the songs from a mainstream digital music store (such as the iTunes Store, Amazon, Beatport etc.), all that infomation will already be there, for each song. Tha will group songs together as one album. Even a single, that is, one song released on its own and not on an album, would still have an "album title". The album title for a single would be the same as the title of the song.
  • If you copied from CDs into your iTunes Library, iTunes should have fetched the infomation for the album from the internet. This is automatic, unless you have turned that option off.
  • If the music is from another source, such as DJ downloads, it may well be that the album title field (or tag) has not been filled in. In this case, you cannot simply "transfer from genres to albums". Instead, you will need to fill in the Album tag yourself and re-sync your iPod with your iTunes Library in order for those changes to appear on the iPod as well.

Check the relevant songs and their tags in your iTunes Library. A "tag" is a field of information, tagged to a song. The information is built in to the song. (More on this in a moment.)

Check these songs in your iTunes Library; does the album title appear? You can check in several places:

  • Album view
  • Songs view, with Album name displayed as a column (see screenshot below)
  • Artists view
  • or even the Genres view. The album title will still be there
  • check an individual song, by highlighting it and selecting Edit/Song Info

Look at the screenshot below of the Songs View:

The Browser Columns may not be displayed in your Library (it's an option you can turn on). However, the Album column should be there by default, although the position of the columns may be different in your Library. If you look at the songs here, are the album titles there?

If you want to check more detail for an individual song, you can select it and click on Edit/Song Info. Below is the Song Info for one of those songs:

If the album title is missing from here you can complete it now. However, rather than complete each song individually, it will be easier if you can identify all the songs from one album, group them together and then edit the album title for all of them in one go. If this is what is required, let me know and I can probably help you sort out which songs are from which album.

So; what did you find?

  • Is it every album (and "single") in your Library, or just some that are missing the album title?
  • where did you obtain the music that doesn't have album titles? (I.E. mainstream digital store, or CD, or website download?)
  • also, what format are your songs in? The usual format is either MP3 or Apple's AAC (m4a). You can find the format by selecting the File tab in Song Info. Notice File at the right-hand end of the headings

It's not clear exactly what you mean, so I'll have to deduce from what you have written.

It sounds to me as though you're looking in the (Music) Library section of your iPod and can see a heading named Genres. Under that heading (genres), you can see a list of albums. But on the Library menu, there is no option for Albums. In other words, a menu list similar to the one shown below, but yours does not have Albums on it:

First of all, drag the screen upwards to ensure that Albums is not simply at the bottom of that list. If it's not there, click on the Edit button at the top of the Library menu (I've highlighted it in the screenshot). That opens up an edit screen like the one shown below:

On this edit list are all the options available. Tap the Albums circle so that there is a tick on it. Tap on Done. This adds it to the main Library menu.

Apologies for the poor quality of the screenshots.

If this does not address the issue you're having, please explain in more detail.

Hi

Thank you for your prompt reply which was helpful. But didn't quite "answer my question" which I didn't explain too well!

I do have the "Albums" on my Library list and it is already ticked.

What I wanted to do do if possible was to transfer my albums which have turned up on the "GENRES" list to the main Library if this is possible?

I don't really understand how they ended up in the Genres as when I usually sync the ipod it seems to always put any new music onto the Library first time?

Thank you for your time
