How do I download my photos from my phone to my PC?

My phone is unlocked and there's nothing in my iCloud, so why do I continue to get a "Somthing went wrong" error?

I plug my iPhone X into my PC via a USB cable. The Photos download window automatically opens with all of the pictures on my iPhone appearing in the dialogue box, asking me to select or unselect the photos I'd like to download. At the bottom of this dialogue box is an "Import selected" option.

It doesn't seem to matter if I have all of the photos selected or just one photos selected. When I click "Import selected", it looks like its working for a few moments and then I receive a "Somthing went wrong" error message. The full message is "Something went wrong Your files might not have been imported. More info (link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4027134/windows-10-import-photos-and-videos-from-phone-to-pc) with 'Try again' and 'Close' options at the bottom of this error message.
