Windows iTunes doesn't sync iPod

The iTunes makes like it's syncing to the iPod Classic, but instead a Files window opens labeled E for the device. The "sync" goes to the E drive and is ignored by iTunes somehow. How do I get iTunes to sync directly to the iPod and bypass the E drive? I'd appreciate the help. I've searched online for help but I haven't seen anything that addresses the E drive taking over for iTunes.

Put your iPod classic in disk mode* before connecting it to your computer. Make sure it assigned a unique drive letter. Try syncing once more.

* Press the “Play/Pause” and “Menu” buttons simultaneously and hold them down until the Apple logo appears on your iPod's display. Release the “Play/Pause” and “Menu” buttons when you see the Apple logo and immediately press and hold the “Next” and “Previous” buttons at the same time until the Disk Mode screen appears.
