Upgrade possibilities questions - please help!

I have a late 2015 imac 21.5" 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 RAM, 3.1 GHz Intel core i5 processor. Computer is about 2.5 years old, but I've never been really happy with performance, especially compared with a 2008 imac which I got a good 8 years out of. Very slow multitasking, moving between apps when multiple apps open, slow to get going when awoken from sleep and even slow sometimes on just changing browser tabs. Some of these seem even slower than the 2008 which I still have around, but don't really use. The slowness is really frustrating, but I don't really want to get a new computer yet since this is less than 3 years old, so I'm wondering if there are some easy fixes or upgrades I can do (or people can recommend) so that I might be able to get more time out of this current imac.

From my reading, its obvious that I cannot upgrade the RAM on this particular imac I have. But I have read some posts about installing and running the OS from an external SSD, which some people say works well. I currently run Mojave, though don't think the slowness got significantly worse when upgraded from Sierra, though it is getting worse in general.... Would running the OS off an SSD drive be a feasible option, and would it make a significant improvement in performance?

If not, would doing a hard factory reset potentially help?

On a kind of separate note, I read a couple of threads mentioning using an old mac as a second monitor - is this something I would be able to use my 2008 mac for?

Any thoughts, advice, suggestions greatly appreciated!

Depending on what those "open programs" are, 8GB of RAM could be an issue.

The thing to verify that, after quite a while of normal use, open Applications->Utilities->Activity Monitor

select the Memory tab and at the bottom of the window look at "Swap used:" If that number

is zero or only a couple megabytes, RAM may not be an issue. However, if that is

up to hundreds of megabytes or even gigabytes, then you have an issue with RAM usage

and the solution would be not to keep so many apps open.

Maybe I misunderstand - its not running "great" which is why I'm thinking of the SSD... You mean stick with present computer with OS on SSD "upgrade"?

it may just be the slow rotational drive or a lack of RAM. I would clone to the SSD and then if you're still having problems with speed we can troubleshoot from there.

Or, you can post an Etrecheck report and we can see what's going on now. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. It will contain no personal information. Allowing full drive access will improve the quality of the report.

Appreciate the help... I apologize for not being that technically knowledgable - how does the # of GB relate in this case? Would the SSD drive also be needed for a lot of storage? I have no issue getting a larger drive in that case. Or would more GB help things run even faster?

Currently, my computer hard drive has 303 GB of 510 GB available, so its really not that full. Which is one reason why I wasnt quite clear on why the computer seems to run so slow. I feel like I just got a dud - I often have several programs running at a time, but mostly do websurfing (w/chrome), scanning, and MS Office type stuff (Word, Excel).

Thanks I will do that! Actually price is same on Amazon for 500 vs 250.

Would you all recommend *not* doing a hard reset in this case? (ie, just try using the SSD first) ... I can likely find instructions on how to install the OS to the SSD, but if anyone has a link, that would be great too. Should I stick with Mojave or would running the OS from the SSD make it worthwhile to ugrade that to Catalina?

I should clarify - I rechecked my HD - its 1T, but there is 861GB available. (I was a doofus before and looking at the #s of my current external HD)

Any reason or thoughts why I would have such slowness to begin with? I'm not using a ton of the HD space, and the computer is not *that* old. The only thing I can think of is the multitasking and leaving multiple programs open, but I would think it still should be faster. Just trying to trouble shoot.

Appreciate the help and discussion!
