Apple TV without home WiFi

I know I won’t be able to utilize all of its features, but will I be able to use the Apple TV to airstream Netflix, Hulu, etc. from my iPhone X without home Wi-Fi? I have good cell service with unlimited data but no real home internet options in the rural area I live in. I have a new TV but it is not a “smart” tv and I’m just looking for an option to mirror my iPhone to my TV without home internet.

iPhone X, iOS 13

Technically it is possible to have the Apple TV set-top box connect to the Personal Hotspot on your phone. The Apple TV sees a valid network and is okay with that. Your mobile phone service provider may not be okay with that (it varies). See their terms and conditions. Also, unlimited data plans aren’t really unlimited, often referred to with their Fair Use Policy. The data use will be capped after reaching the often monthly limit (inquire where the limit is for your plan), or throttling to make video data impossible. With this information, you will be able to calculate how many hours of TV can be watched this way each month (10 days worth perhaps).

In short: It can be done, but it is a bad user experience, and thus not advised.

I do not have a hotspot/tethering option as part of my phone plan. When I spoke with someone in Apple support on the matter, he told me he believed as long as I set up the Apple TV while at the Apple store or somewhere with public Wi-Fi, I should be able to bring it home and connect to my TV and iPhone for airplay use only, but I’m looking to see if anyone else in a rural area or similar situation has had any firsthand experience with this.
