Apologies, I see that the article I linked to no longer exists. Here is an archived copy. Older iPods show a different graphic, but the meaning is the same, the hard drive won't initialize properly, so the device cannot read the data from it or function as an iPod. For newer classics it may make sense to replace the failed drive with an SD adaptor and an SD card, but I'm not sure that is feasible with your older device.

The hard drive has probably failed. See If you see a red X icon on your iPod classic or iPod nano (5th generation or earlier) - Apple Support. Given the age/model I suspect any possible repair would be uneconomic.
