I just allowed my iTunes Match to expire because I never saw the use for it but perhaps I misunderstood it. Now that it has expired I cannot listen to several songs on my iPhone. I thought the whole idea of iTunes was so you could sync music across devices and not have to pay to do so. Am I wrong?

You don't need Apple Music or iTunes match.

Settings > Music > Sync Library > Off, then sync what you want from iTunes.

Thanks for that. I happened to be walking by an Apple store today and they ended up having me sign out of my Apple ID, turn off my phone, sign back in and sync and voila, everything came back.
Thanks, Jim. I had already tried that and I still have a lot of songs in iTunes that have a cloud next to them that I cannot download. I keep getting a message saying that I need to renew my iTunes Match subscription in order to download them. This includes songs that I burned onto iTunes from CDs as well as songs I bought years ago.
I am signed into the same iTunes account on my iMac and on my iPhone.
Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
