My new Apple Watch series 5

Hey, I recently got gifted the series 5 Apple Watch. I’m reaching out to you to ask how the water resistance works. I surf and I wander if I can use my Apple Watch in the water, and if so, do I need to turn the water lock feature on all the time?

I have read a bunch of articles but I still don’t get if u have to activate the water proof mode or is the watch always water proof. like is there something I have to do before I go for a swim? Or take a shower?
