I have an old phone 4 which I was using to store audiobook mp3's. I now have a new Iphone X with more memory and would lik to transfer the mp3 from 4 to X without losing existing mp3 on X. I have tried syncing on I tunes but could not transfer mp3s.

If audiobooks are purchased in Apple Books, they can be redownloaded on a supported device:
Redownload apps, music, movies, TV shows, and books
If the files came from a third-party source, there's not a supported method to transfer them from the iPhone 4 to iPhone X directly, or from the iPhone 4 to iTunes. The content would need to be already located on your computer, then synced to the iPhone X following the steps here:
