Canon MAXIFY 5100 software compatibility with Mac OS 10.15 Catalina?
I recently purchased a new Canon MAXIFY 5160 printer, and I'm preparing to upgrade my 3 Macs to Catalina. I want to do this upgrade particularly carefully, So I checked compatibility of all my apps, including Parallels. I've also checked Lacie software is compatible for my RAID drive. But when I came to downloading and installing my new printer software I hit a problem. Canon's support page for MAXIFY 5100 + Mac OS 10.15 lists 8 software items to download and install. But two of them appear twice, and each copy is named identically. When I downloaded them, the resulting .dmg files had different sizes. The items were: Easy-PhotoPrint Editor Ver.1.3.1(Mac) [97.3MB and 97.4MB ] and MB5100 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver.16.40.1.0 (Mac) [15.4MB and 15.6MB]. This is confusing. I don't know which one to choose. I also don't know if Canon's support page is just poorly managed or has been hacked so I download a trojan virus. I contacted Canon, and asked 1) which files are the right ones 2) when would they correct their website 3) when would they issue an apology to their customers.
I got this reply:
Thank you for contacting Canon Australia.
I would like to inform you that the download pages for all of our consumer products are connected to
the main download server of Canon which is accessible from all regions, and it is completely safe.
There are instances when the first download and the second download of a driver or software would
show a difference in the file size, the first downloaded file having bigger size. However, any succeeding
download of the same file will have the same size as the second, as long as the first downloaded file is
still in the computer memory.
This has something to do with how the computer handles temporary files and downloads. The first
instance usually requires bigger memory, but the succeeding downloads of the same file would have
smaller size.
This is the same as when you visit a website for the first time. The computer would store information
about the website so that you can easily access the site next time you visit.
Quite apart from the fact that Canon did not answer any of my questions, this response does not seem correct to me. Is there a knowledgeable person on this forum who could tell me if this assertion is true?
