This is the only device I have that does this. I read at night, turn off the ipad. I forget that it behaves this way, plug it in and then it's day time in my bedroom lol.
Is there a setting that allows it to maintain its current state when charging?

Yes. They all work like this.
There is absolutely no reason to turn the iPad completely off while charging. It accomplishes nothing. Just put it to sleep, and let it charge. It will be charged and ready to be used quicker.
Also, they are set to turn on automatically so you know when something is actually wrong with them and not just a low battery.
You need to turn it off after you plug it in to charge. If it is off and then you plug it in, it will turn on.

As it won't hurt the device to leave it on but asleep, there's no reason to worry about it. That's the way it's designed to be used.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll have to remember this. I was hoping there was a way to stop this. Are all apple devices like this? Just curious. I won this thing in a photo contest and don't own any apple products.
With all the notifications I get, my bedroom would look like a rave. I would hope that apple has a way to turn off notifications on a schedule, but really, just turning it off when I'm not using it would seem to be logical.

I have not turned off my phone or my iPad in a long time. It does not harm the battery to keep it plugged in for hours. My iPad stays plugged in most of the time I am using it. I charge my phone over night.
Is there a way to prevent an ipad from powering on when charging?
