Avatar Gender

Why did my gender avatar suddenly change from female to male? My name could be either male or female. Somehow Apple always knew (since 2011) that I was a female. How can I reset it to female? It is the avatar in the right hand corner of the App Store and other places.

iPhone 7, iOS 12

You’ve clearly been lied to about this and related topics, and probably also about biology, but that’s fairly common. Unfortunately. Hair length is hair length. Nothing more.

If you're referring to the following highlighted image cropped directly from here in the Apple Support Communities:

That's a default image that Apple has apparently tweaked. Pick your own from the available list of provided icons in your account settings here in the communities. Or upload your own image, as I and other responders here in this thread have done. This isn't from your system, Apple won't upload an image from your system without your permission. Or a cat picture, as seems common. And FWIW, inferring a person's gender or their preferences from an in-person meeting or from a photographic image—much less from a silhouette such as here—is fundamentally impossible.

Thanks I went with the butterfly. Seems somewhat sexist that only a male head is available. But it is what it is. Happy to not be identified male. Strangely the female avatar on Facebook opening page has been changed to male. Thank goodness my Facebook profile picture didn’t change. Again thanks to all. What a good experience.

Why do you think that is a male head? All human heads are shaped pretty much the same way.

Happy to not be identified male.

Neither your sex nor your gender are relevant to your participation here.

The avatars in the App Store are not necessarily the same as the avatars in the forum. It's completely different software.

The notion that you can tell gender by hair length seems odd to me. I've had, in my life hair shaved to about a quarter of an inch and hair that reached below my waist. What gender am I?
