Transfer data from external hard drive to new Mac Pro

I put all my information from my old Mac Pro onto an external hard drive. I now want to transfer my photos and music from the hard drive to my new Mac however, I get a message that states "you can't open the application because it is in a Time Machine Back Up". I also tried other means to open the applications and the error message stated " operation can not be completed because you don't have the necessary permission".

Thank you for your reply, I did do as you instructed however, right before it finished migration I received a message stating "This version of Gutenprint is not compatible with this version of macOS. The applications did not transfer from the external hard drive to my computer. How do I get rid of Gutenprint or go around it?

Gutenprint didn't transfer or all applications didn't transfer? It's odd that all your apps wouldn't transfer. Of course, Mac OS default apps don't transfer because they are replaced with new versions. But if other third party applications didn't transfer delete Gutenprint on the source if you don't think you'll use it and try it again. If you need Gutenprint, check for an update for Catalina.
