activation lock

I found an old iphone 5 in my house that i must have got from a friend years ago, although it might be one of my sisters friends old phones. They had a passcode that i didnt know so i restored the iphone using iTunes. It is now requiring an activation lock code/apple ID and password that i dont have and have no capacity of getting. Is the phone basically garbage if i cant get this info or is there a way to bypass this? (I can assure whoevers phone this is is not missing it.)
