When I play anything on my AirPods, no sound comes out and it automatically disconnects.

My AirPods will say they’re connected have have the headphones icon in the right hand corner but when I play anything, no sound comes out and it automatically disconnects. I’ve already updated the software on my phone, turn Bluetooth and my phone on and off and even tried to forget the device for my AirPods and nothing works.
