I'm using Numbers to run a monthly check account and have been for at least 5 years but all of a sudden entries of Numbers under the Amount Column are being read as Text and not recognised for the Running Balance! Have not been able the persuade Numbers to read as numbers. WHY?

Hard to say without seeing your specific data. If you would like help, post a screenshot of the problem situation. I suggest duplicate the sheet, then modify values so they do not represent real numbers for you and change descriptions (or mask them by setting the text to white) to hide any personal data.
Guess 1: the dates are not actually dates now. select the column, if there is one, with the dates and specifically format as a "Date/Time" value
Guess 2: the numbers are text and should be Numbers. Change the format of that column "Number"
Guess 3: the running balance formula does not fill all the cells in its' column. fill this down as needed
