it has a little warning triangle in the top left corner and says the update is required, so I plugged into iTunes to update but I cannot get iTunes to bypass the warning and get to updates. its an iPhone 6. it has been sitting in a drawer for some time
Which iPhone? Which OS? What is the exact message?
Have you tried activating it in iTunes on your computer? And make sure you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer.
yes and yes, the iPhone icon appears grey when iTunes opens
Sounds like the battery may have failed on it. You will need to get it replaced.
