How do I determine whether a server is valid or is just pretending to be?

Certificate issue. What do see if if clicking on the "?" at the bottom left?
I suggest to contact Mediacombb support.
Also check if there is no Proxy enabled in Network Preferences > Wifi > Advanced > Proxy. Assuming a Wifi connection.

This can be a server certificate issue or a temporary network problem. Which Mail Server? Post a screenshot of the error message.

Hmmm... This now looks more like a network issue. Is your Internet connection working? Can you browse the Web?
What do you see in Network Preferences?
Just to eliminate the obvious, restart the computer.

When you ask "What do you see in Network Preferences?" are you asking what I see when I click on Settings>Network>Advanced>Preferred Networks?
I most certainly will cycle power the next time I see the "can't verify identity" popup. I tend not to power down very often (but I suspect I periodically should).
Thank you for all your suggestions.
I appreciate your help.
Using a hotspot can throw this error.
Expired certificates can throw this error—typically the ISP would be away of expired issues and will rectify, so consider it temporary.
A mobile device may still still have access as a short term work-a-round.
When I click on the "?" at the bottom left this page, from the Mac OS User Guide, pops up:
