How do I determine whether a server is valid or is just pretending to be?

Certificate issue. What do see if if clicking on the "?" at the bottom left?

I suggest to contact Mediacombb support.

Also check if there is no Proxy enabled in Network Preferences > Wifi > Advanced > Proxy. Assuming a Wifi connection.

When you ask "What do you see in Network Preferences?" are you asking what I see when I click on Settings>Network>Advanced>Preferred Networks?

I most certainly will cycle power the next time I see the "can't verify identity" popup. I tend not to power down very often (but I suspect I periodically should).

Thank you for all your suggestions.
I appreciate your help.

Using a hotspot can throw this error.

Expired certificates can throw this error—typically the ISP would be away of expired issues and will rectify, so consider it temporary.

A mobile device may still still have access as a short term work-a-round.
