I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro which is not booting up correctly. When I turn it on instead of the grey screen & dark grey apple logo I get a tonal red colour, then the load bar and followed by a blank grey screen and then it turns itself off!

You can try both:
resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
and
resetting the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
