I imported photo files from my iPhone and they apparently are saved on the iMac hard disk in a file format "HEIC". I now want to save the HEIC files to an external CD, However, I cannot find where these HEIC files are stored on my hard disk. I can view them in photos, but cannot find them to export to external media. Any help appreciated. Running Mojave version 10.14.6. Thanks

As long as you always go first to Photos for your images, it is not difficult.
Note that if you upgrade to Catalina, Wilddrums technique won't work since Photos renames your images inside the database. Another reason why it is not recommended to directly access files inside the Photos Library.
You can find them there "~/Pictures/Photos Library.photoslibrary/Masters/". You can use the Go To command in Finder and paste that path.

Have you tried searching for them? Have you looked in the /Home/Pictures/ folder? Did you import them directly to Photos? If so, then they aren't stored elsewhere; they are in your Photos library.
You can also create a smart album in Photos to find all your HEIC's and then use file->export to get them out of Photos.

Spotlight whether in Spotlight itself, or the Finder search field, will reveal .heic images — provided Spotlight Search Results Images is selected.
