HEIC Photos Exported Mac to Hard Drive

I am backing up pictures from Google Photos by downloading them to my Mac and putting them on an external hard drive. HEIC files are being saved with an “exec” icon and I cannot find a way to open them on my computer (photos says no image, preview not available, etc).

If I use this hard drive with a device that supports HEIC, will I be able to see photos that were transferred through my Mac that cannot?

Is the system version stated below your question still valid? OS X 10.10?

Then you should convert the images to JPEG or upgrade to macOS 10.13 High Sierra, if possible, see: Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support

If your mac cannot be upgraded, you will have to convert the files. To convert the HEIC files, you could use the online converter at ‎heictojpg.com. You can convert up to 5 images at once.

You can control-click (or two finger-click or right-click) on the file name to get a little menu. Select "Rename" from the menu, and the file name will appear in a text box with the file name highlighted. Don't type yet! Right arrow to get the the end of the name. Then you can delete "exe" and type "heic" and hit return.

Or, you can click on the file name to select the file. The wait a moment and click again, and you get the same text box to type into.
