I am looking for instructions on how to move my photos folder to an external drive.

lots of articles and examples online, but could not find any that shows how to do it on catalina

Can the Photos program be run on a thumb drive? My iMac (Late 2013 running Catalina) is getting pretty full, and I have over 40,000 photos on it. I have them backed up to an external hard drive (My Passport for Mac). I'm thinking about deleting a lot of them from my iMac hard drive, and then re-importing them if I want to work on them. However, on the external drive, I can only open them one at a time in preview, and I can't figure out a way to be able scroll through them like I can in my Photos program to find the one I want. Is it possible to install the Photos program on the external drive (or on a thumb drive) and be able to scroll through them? (I can scroll through the thumbnails, but not the opened pictures. Makes it hard to find the picture I want.) If so, how would I do that? Thanks!

Photos app on macOS Catalina - Hard drive format and back up options/advice/suggestions I am trying to find an effective solution to backing up my photos. Currently I use portable hard drives (formatted in exFAT) as I rely on them to be accessible both through my Mac and collaborators PCs - one hard drive stays home with the back ups and the 'master' comes with. I have been told recently that the Photo's application on Mac is not compatible with exFAT (I currently have several of my photos libraries on a hard drive formatted in exFAT and was in the process of moving other photos libraries currently on my Mac over to this hard drive). So really I have several questions... Can you copy a photos library over to a portable hard drive (and if so , what is the best way to do this?); are my photos libraries on my exFAT hard drive unstable and should I be looking at removing them asap? (some background on this would be brilliant!) and; if this is the case and photos is not compatible with exFAT (or at least will eventually corrupt) is my best option to purchase two additional hard drives in a format capable of supporting the photos libraries? If any one has suggested formats or ways they back up their photos with their Mac photos app (or other applications), I would love your advice! Thank you!

Where to put old Photos Library in Catalina? I rescued data from an obsolete MacBook Pro's corrupt disc - I now have an external hard drive with a folder tree like this: Users > name > Pictures > Photos Library. The Photos Library file is 106 GB, and I'd like to import it into a new MacBook Air running Catalina 10.15.5. I don't find where to import the Photos Library file in Catalina. My Finder window has Favorites (AirDrop, Recents, Applications, Desktop, Documents, Downloads) and Locations (External HardDrive, Network). But no navigable folders for the hard drive like I'm used to. Can someone point me where to import these photos in my new Air? Thanks!

They are applicable to Catalina.

Don't delete the Pictures folder, just delete the Photos Library that is inside the folder (after you are sure it is in the new location and that you have a backup).

thanks for the link.

i almost got there, i followed the page instructions, but now when i try to delete the old Pictures folder i get the popup

The item "Pictures" can't be moved to the trash because it can not be deleted

i relaunched finder ( that was one suggestion i found )

any suggestions
