Difficulties accessing splash screen with Macbooks

This is definitely an Apple issue.

I have a school of mixed BYOD devices. Our wifi splash screen appears for everyone with Windows and ChromeOS.

It does not appear for about 1/2 the Macs. It's nothing to do with traffic or putting a password into the "Network Name".

Two issues happen:

  1. Blank splash screen
  2. No splash screen

Very frustrating. Dealing with 11-18 year olds is tough enough without this as well.

We use Cisco Meraki, so if Apple could identify what is causing it and let me know. I'm happy to tell the students if they need to upgrade to particular operating system version to make it work.

Our workaround is:

  1. Empty the caches on Safari & Chrome (yes both) - blank screen issue is fixed.
  2. Use a nonSSL website to force traffic. (that's a Cisco Meraki issue) - no splash screen is sometimes fixed.

Hi, just other users here, I could give you a link for Apple Feedback, but unless you take a few million others with you I doubt you'd be heard.

Can you tell us users any thing more about it, like is it using http:// or https:// >

Are the Macs that get through using different Browsers than the ones that cannot?

You should contact Meraki for support as it is their product you are having difficulties with.

Are any of the devices which fail using anti-virus or other security apps which could be preventing the splash screen? Have you disabled or removed all browser extensions? Tried creating a new user account on those Macs? Have you tried from Safe Mode?

BYOD devices will always cause problems since there are an infinite number of variations in hardware and software involved including custom configurations and setups by many non-technical users.

Thank you. I already did ask Meraki. And as the issue only shows up on older Macbooks, and as this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250356136

talks about it as well, it's pretty clear that it is a Macbook issue.

Thank you for all those troubleshooting tips, realistically it's not possible to do further investigation as the goal is to get the student & Macbook back into class as quickly as possible.

I thought that perhaps an antivirus product could be at fault, but they seem to all have different products.

I guess I'm hoping that somebody had experienced this before and had narrowed down the exact issue.
