Catalina: How can i view individual files from my iPhone backup?

My iMac is backed up with Time Machine to an external drive. I connected my iPhone to the iMac and backed it up to the iMac. I'm presuming Time Machine has now backed up the iPhone's contents to the external drive as well.

I understand the iPhone files are stored in Library/Application Support/Mobile Sync, however these files cannot be opened. I know Finder will let me restore the entire iPhone from a backup, but how can I selectively view and restore an individual iPhone file?

iPhone 4s, iOS 9

while you might be able to view or access a backup file's contents, the contents usually aren't stored in a format that you can read.
