mac doesn't find phone in itunes

I just updated to newest version of iOS and now iTunes doesn't show my iPhones. I've restarted and check for all updates on both my phone and my mac. What else can I do?

doesn't support update My iPhone doesn't have enough free storage to update ios, so I want to do it (and backup) through iTunes. However, iTunes on my MacBook Pro (2012) isn't finding/recognizing my iPhone. I reinstalled iTunes, but it says I need to upgrade my mac OS. I'm reluctant to do that, since this older Mac probably won't support the newer OS. Is there another way to get iTunes to find my phone? Or should I go ahead and attempt an OS upgrade? I'm kind of stuck, otherwise - can't update my phone with wifi OR with iTunes!
