After backing up computer using Time Machine and an external hard drive, do I remove the external hard drive or do I leave plugged into the computer?

I have an Imac and leave it on all the time with the external hard drive always on. As macjack says, you get regular backups every hour that way. I would suggest, however, that you encrypt your backup drive so that, if it gets stolen, all your data can’t be recovered.

Leave it plugged in if you want TM to do hourly backups.
Do I leave the external hard drive plugged in after backup or do you remove?
