I'd like to erase an external hard drive that I have used before. I don't know how to do it.

Erasing an External Drive:
Do so in Disk Utility, but, if there is anything of importance, then export what need be, so that nothing is lost. If this is not seen, then click the Mount button (top right-cornet of window) first.

Attach it to your computer and use Disk Utility to format the drive.
Use disc utility you should be able to select the drive and erase or format from there
