I have a Text Conversation with a contact. It was using Primary line for texting. I want to change the default line for communication via text to Secondary now, since Secondary line gives me free text messages while primary is now charging me. I could find no settings for messages and all text goes only from Primary line. The calling default is set to Secondary and all calls are made via Secondary Phone line.

The Apple support executive escalated to the escalation team who did a system screen viewer session and after a few settings concluded that this is a feature of the OS and once a line is selected it cannot be changed and of another line has to be selected the entire conversation has to be deleted and a new conversation started! Anyways have given them a feedback if they could add this feature to have an option to change the line in messages

Thank you for your detailed response. I appreciate it. I would like to have you try deleting this contact and adding it back. Then, you would be able to assign the correct phone number to them. Please let me know if this does the trick.

Thank you for providing those screenshots. I think the next best step here would be to contact Apple Support. Just type "eSim" into the search bar and select "Troubleshooting eSIM on an iOS device." You will be in great hands.

Secondary line is enabled for SMS. In fact for some of the Contacts, that is the default line.
For this particular Contact, I had initially set Primary as the default line. All calls/SMS were hence through Primary line. Later on I changed the default line to Secondary for this particular contact. But irrespective of default, all SMS communication still happens via primary line only because that was te line which was used for the last communication. I have noticed this before too for other contacts and the line gets changed if the contact replies to my secondary number and then all communication henceforth would happen only on the secondary line, there seems to be no option for me to choose the number to use for SMS communication and it always is the "Last Used Line".

I even tried this for the existing contact to use the new message function. I could select Secondary but the moment the contact was selected, the test message was sent through the Primary line.

I understand that you would like to make sure that all of your text messages are coming through your secondary line. Paying for each text could add up fast, and I'm glad to help you look into this. One thing I would do first is reach out to your carrier to ensure that the second line is enabled for SMS messages.
The Primary line will, by default, be used for iMessage and to call or send messages to people who aren't in your address book. Once a contact has been added, you can then assign it for calls and messaging. You can read much more detail in the Apple Support article I have linked below.
