-50 error code on 2010 i7 iMac.

I do not have a question. I stated to BDAQUA that I would send a response if I ever figured out why I was having this problem. I considered what was different about my 2007 mac pro, which did not have a problem transferring files to my network hard drives. The only difference between the two computers is the use of a VPN with the iMac.

When I disconnect the VPN, I am able to transfer files from the iMac to the network hard drives. I do not know why the VPN would cause a -50 error to occur. My -50 error problem occurred in September, when my Airport Extreme router stopped working after 9.5 years of continuous operation.

I considered purchasing a sixth generation Airport Extreme from ebay, but opted to purchase a Netgear 1750 instead. Two weeks after installing the Netgear router the -50 error code started showing up on the iMac. I tried a few things I found on youtube, which worked a few times, but ultimately stopped working.

I thought I would need to purchase a new machine at some point until I tried switching off the VPN two days ago. Many thanks to BDAQUA for his many suggestions.

Hmmm, just thinking...

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)

Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.

Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.

If it does contain data...

I found the solution to my problem. It had nothing to do with my VPN. Originally, I was able to transfer a movie file to my network hard drives without having to leave the file in a folder. When my Airport Extreme router failed three months ago, each time I would try to transfer a movie file to my network drives, I would get the -50 error.

After the Airport extreme failed, I purchased a Netgear AC1750 router. That is when I started seeing the -50 error problem. Last week I used the cp -R command in terminal to transfer folders from the SSD in my iMac to the network drives. Keep in mind I had to leave the file in the folder to transfer the files via the terminal. Those transfers worked flawlessly.

Yesterday, I decided to try transferring a movie file in the folder directly from my SSD to one of the network drives. That also worked flawlessly. After the transfer took place, I removed the file from the folder on the network drive and sent the folder to the trash. I do not know why I have to send the file to the drives in the folder, but it works. If anyone else knows why, I am interested in finding out.
