On an iMac Catalina how does one change the desktop backgrounds to a rotating series of photos from Photos. Previously I could have the desktop background rotating through an album but now I can only set one photo or I have to leave a number on the desktop which is messy!

You can still do it. Select a picture from an album in Photos and enable "Change ....". The Desktop picture will change between the photos from this album.
