Can you import sub folders into iTunes

ive just had my Windows PC fixed and upgraded to Windows 10. My music library is a mess so tak8ng opportunity to reorganised before downloading iTunes and importing to a new library.

my question is, will ITunes import subfolders and keep everything in the same order that I’ve organised on my computer?

Also, when iTunes imports, does it create another copy of everything, as I don’t want to find duplicates of stuff. And when importing new music does iTunes alert you if it suspects duplicates?

Many thanks!

Hello Saskins8,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that you're reorganizing your music library, and you're wondering if subfolders will be imported when you reinstall iTunes on your Windows 10 PC and use a new iTunes library.

Could you tell us more about what steps you're taking to organize your music, then import it to a new iTunes library? Is this being done on the same PC or are you moving your iTunes library from one PC to another? If you're creating a new library (Use multiple iTunes libraries on PC) by copying or restoring from a backup that was made from another iTunes library, the folders and organization should remain the same.

This should not cause files to duplicate, however here's some steps you can take to find and delete duplicates if you do run in to that: Find items and duplicates in iTunes on PC

Cheers!

Hi Chris,

thanks for your reply. My PC is now away again as some USB ports aren’t working. However, in answer to your question I am using Windows Explorer. I had my messy music library backed up and it’s back in the iTunes folder under music. I have started reorganising and slowly I am finding some missing tracks from various artists and albums and deleting duplications. But I am mainly creating a better system that will work for me. For example, I have artist, then sometimes sub artist (ie: same artist who is collaborating with another artist or orchestra, etc), then albums, then tracks. Sometimes I create another album under the artist if there are songs not belonging to album or if info not there. I also have a few genre folders where I group artists in the same way.

This is a time consuming piece of organisation that will help me to find my content quicker and also find content under a genre folder that I may have forgotten was ther, especially as I have a lot of artists for whom I only have one track.

so I need to know that iTunes won’t mess up my order or duplicate stuff.
