Apps won’t stay on left side of dock

I am trying to put different apps on my dock, when I drag them down ( to an empty bar ) they do not stay.

Menus instead of action? It seems nearly every time I click on the + to add a new tab, or on the Forward or Reverse buttons, or on apps in the Dock, instead of just doing any of those actions, I get instead a dropdown menu!! I just want the new tab to open, or to go back to the previous one, forward to the next one, or the app I clicked on, to just open!! And sometimes clicking doesn't register, or grabbing the side rails won't move the position of the screen, or scrolling won't happen! I have to do something else, then try again, for it to finally do what I need doing. Why is this happening so often??

disappearing alias for an app I downloaded an app, installed it and created an alias which I planned to keep on the doc. It goes onto the doc but when I am finished using the app, at some point it disappears! This keeps happening. How can I install it so it won't disappear?

You can only drag icons to the left-side of the separator shown on the Dock - and, depending upon the size of your screen, there is a maximum number of App icons that can be installed in the Dock.
