Iphones will not connect to 2g network, only 5g

Both my Iphone6 and my wife's Iphone6 will only connect to our 5g network even though we have many devices in the house connected to our 2g network. I can't install a smart device using the 5g network, only 2g.

iPhone 6, iOS 12

I’m assuming you mean a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network vs a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. The iPhone 6 should support both, so the problem is most likely in your router or router settings. For example, the IP address range may not have enough unused IP addresses. As a first step try restarting your router. Then go over the settings carefully in the router’s control center.

As another possibility, do your 2.4 and 5 GHz networks have different SSIDs? If they don’t you can’t control which band the phones will connect to. They will always choose 5 GHz.

Is that an issue? Most any dual-band Wi-Fi router permits communications between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi clients.

It may also be an interference problem. Try changing bands in the router. Most routers will default to band 6 or 11, so choosing a different band may help. Also, as my fellow user-volunteer has pointed out, as long as they are sharing the same router devices that are limited to 2.4 GHz should still be able to communicate with a device connected to the 5 GHz bands.
