My ipad is stuck on Apple logo and will not connect to laptop to reboot. Please help?

My ipad had been trying to update a few month ago and had turned itself off, since then when I try turning it on it freezes on the apple logo on start up, I downloaded iTunes on my laptop but its not acknowledging that my device is plugged in, a even though its charging my ipad through the laptop. someone please help I need it working and can't afford to buy a new one!
