Since Catalina, I get 'lsd' and 'pkd' in the activity monitor. Slows down everything.

Currently I have 99% of apps closed, and still my monitor shows LSD (57.1% of CPU Time) and PKD (74% of CPU Time). I'm running Chrome for this window, Dropbox app, Outlook and Spotify right now. My fan is currently running, and PKD is on top of the activity monitor.

I've noticed when an Adobe app or the Finder acts up, my Mac's fan spins up, everything pauses, it's usually due to the PKD in the Activity Monitor, I can force quit it, and the processes (like saving a file etc) will reconvene.

Dropbox files in Finder also quit showing the green circle and the share link is not available. I noticed with this problem, I can relaunch FINDER and the green checks and share link are available again.

This only happened after my update to Catalina. 10.15.2 currently.

I've been struggling with this problem for weeks, trying different things I'd read on forums (like resetting PRAM, SMC, etc.) with no luck. I finally found a post that recommended using the lsof (list open files) on the pkd and lad processes to see what they were unhappy about. In my case, it was Microsoft OneNote which I don't use and just followed Microsoft instructions to remove it. So far, pkd/lsd have been much happier.

Yeah. Also, it turns out there's an easier way to solve this.

  1. Open the Activity Monitor.
  2. Double click on a suspicious process (in this case pkd or lsd)
  3. Click on the "Open Files and Ports" tab. You'll see a list of filepaths to certain files on your computer.
  4. Look for any files that you have installed (especially .app files) that appear in this list. If you can't find any, repeat steps 2 and 3 on another suspicious process.
  5. Drag the file to the Trash (provided you've found it within the Finder).

Restart the machine and you should be good to go.

If the problem doesn't go away, chances are a process got stuck on yet another file, and you have to repeat from Step 1. This is what happened to me. Had to delete a batch of FCPX plugins from Library/Plug-Ins, restarted, and my computer went back to normal.

I understand some people are blaming the Adobe Creative Suite, but this was NOT the case for me, as I removed it earlier and did not solve the problem. It seems to be different for every user. Again, this is Catalina being picky with the Fonts, Apps, and Plugins that the user is installing, for whatever reason.

Sure! I contacted them with the issue, while on the phone the rep asked for permission to remote login to my Mac he went through the activity monitor to see the LSD and PKD and also found the ACS was trying to run something over and over again. It took him about 30 minutes of going through to determine what was happening and to fix it. We ended up erasing ACS all together and reinstalling it. That includes all of the Adobe pref files.once wee re-installed and ran the CleanMyMac (awesome program) its been clean running since.

Had been struggling for days. Using the lsof command to inspect the lsd and pkd processes totally worked!

In my case, a bunch of FCPX plugins in the Library/Plugins directory were to blame. Trashed them right away, restarted and now the system is back to normal.

macOS Catalina has been way too "beachbally" regarding Fonts, Apps, and now Plugins. Hopefully Apple takes notice and takes steps to resolve these issues.

Hate this PKD. One standart scenario that causes pkd freeze - viber, telegram - share something (files, photo) - choose what to share - and voila - 139% pkd process

Since Catalina, I get 'lsd' and 'pkd' in the activity monitor. Slows down everything.
