How secure is my new MacBook Pro on a public Wifi?

I am the happy owner of a new MacBook Pro 16 inch 2019 computer. :) Yippie!!!

I am wondering if I am in need of purchasing a MyWifi device for using this groovy new computer in a public place. Or, does the new Apple macOS offer my own security that will protect me from hackers.

Thank you all. :D

If you log in with WPA password, the link will be encrypted, but it is a mistake to do extremely sensitive transactions, such as banking, on public Wi-Fi. This is because a local Bad Actor, listening nearby, may spoof your IP address and capture your data.

There is nothing you can add to make it substantially better, especially NOT so-called Virus scanners, speeder uppers, or cleaners. Getting malware from this connection is not the real risk -- having your data intercepted and stolen is the risk.

VPN software is one thing users install that gives them a FALSE sense of security. It does not improve the link from your computer to the base station (the weak link). It does not provide any additional protection for that.
