Airport Express first generation / high Sierra and El Capitan

Hi,

I need to create a private WIFI network password protected between my computers.

I remembered I had this old Airport Express that I had, probably first generation.

I've tried to make it work, my Mac can see it, and I could initialise it.

But its firmware seems to be not recognisable by my Macs (El Capitan and My High Sierra).

Is there anything I can do, to make it work with one of my Macs?

R

Although a router is easier you can setup one Mac to work as a router.

Look up instructions for ICS. No internet is actually needed.

"Airport Utility can't be installed on this disk.

Correct you cannot install an old airport utility on a newer OS.. because it already has the airport utility installed for your Mac version.

But you can install 5.6.1 by using the special script which you did not do.. you cannot download from Apple and install.. you can install bypassing Apple method.. I spelt it out in my post .. read it again.

I run it exactly as I described. Here is 5.6.1 on the right and 6.3.6 on the left.

Is it a G wireless version.. A1088??

That is no longer considered usable. IMHO it is really too old and you can buy cheap end Gen5 Airport Extreme for $20 or so which is many times superior.

If it is the gen1 N wireless A1264 the airport utility should see it and you can configure it.. although they are not that flexible.

If you really want to get the A1088 version working you must download the airport utility 5.6.1 Launcher

Just google and be bold..You know.. bold.

Apple does not approve!!

How do you intend to have internet on both macs with this setup? Explain in detail and we might be able to suggest a setup that works.

Thank you very much for your response.

I downloaded AirportExpressFWUpdater and it updated the AirportExpress firmware 6.3 with success.

Then I've tried to install Airport Utility 5.6.1, 5.5.3, and 6.3.1,

all of them say:

"Airport Utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported."

Actually I don't want to use internet with this setup, I want to create a private WIFI network to send MIDI datas between 3 different Macs on a show.

The only reason is, that I want to protect this network with a password, which I can't do with the current integrated feature on my Macs anymore, apparently.

My Macs are on High Sierra and El Capitan

You are trying to use the newer 6.3.x version of AirPort Utility, which is not compatible with the ancient version of AirPort Express that you have.

As LaPastenague has already mentioned, you need the old AirPort Utility 5.6.x version to be able to administer your AirPort Express. He provided the instructions to install AirPort Utility 5.6.x in his previous post.

We cannot provide a direct link to 5.6.x, because the forum moderators will remove it, since Apple does not support this software.
