iphone not recognized by imac hence not showing in Apple TV app OR Finder

I want to manually move some songs to my iphone.

I also want to put some on a USB drive to listen in car or portable speaker.

Phone not showing up in finder either.

All OS's are current.

Have tried moving lightning cable to all other USB ports on computer.

is frustrating.

You know I DID see that page before and DID (most of) what it said to try BUT it didn't work. I then attempted connecting phone to my laptop and that DID work.

Difference = brand of lightning cable. On laptop i had an APPLE cable which I brought to my office and voilà!

And it looks like the way to put songs on a USB drive is simply drag and drop.

Your reference to that page got me to revisit it and read more carefully.
