Which iPad is best for a college student?

Hi, I'm thinking of investing in an iPad for college, and I'm trying to figure out which iPad will work the best for me. I don't want a mini because I need a bigger screen to write with for taking notes during lectures. And if possible, I need to spend the least amount of money possible while meeting all the requirements. I only trust Apple products because every time I've tried one that's windows based or not Apple it hasn't been a great purchase. There are also a couple things I'm trying to figure out that will influence me buying an iPad at all.

  1. Which iPad can I use an apple pen with?
  2. When I write with the Apple Pen, can I rest my hand on the screen? Is there a feature I need to switch on to do so?
  3. Do some iPad models have more space capacity than others?
  4. How do I figure out if my school softwares/internet accounts are supported by the iPad's browser/system?

It would be greatly appreciated if someone could help me!

Hi there,

here are some things,

  1. all new iPads support the pencil
  2. if you are trying to save some money

IPad(lower end one): https://www.apple.com/ca/ipad-10.2/

Smart Keyboard (if you want to type on it): https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/product/MPTL2LL/A/smart-keyboard-for-ipad-7th-generation-and-ipad-air-3rd-generation-us-english

Apple Pencil Gen 1: https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/product/MK0C2AM/A/apple-pencil-1st-generation

This is the best setup if you’d like to save money. Also you don’t even need the Smart Keyboard if you aren’t planning on typing anything.

About the storage. You can configure as multiple storage configurations but they will increase price

The Pencil. You can rest your hand on your iPad while typing and it should not affect it at all

If you want to spend not too much more you could go for the iPad Air which is a slight upgrade with a bigger screen, more standard storage and a more powerful processor

iPad Air: https://www.apple.com/ca/ipad-air/

Smart Keyboard (same one): https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/product/MPTL2LL/A/smart-keyboard-for-ipad-7th-generation-and-ipad-air-3rd-generation-us-english

Apple Pencil (same one): https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/product/MK0C2AM/A/apple-pencil-1st-generation

These are both the cheaper “non-Pro” iPads.

Hi Paytonl and everyone with the same question,

An iPad for college or school is the best device for productivity, entertainment, and many other uses. Since Apple leads the tablet market, it has many options to choose from. And this can get confusing since many models are similar and different in different point of views like specs, price, compatibility, etc. So as of January 2020, all the iPads that support the Apple Pencil are:

  • iPad Air (3rd generation)
  • iPad mini (5th generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st or 2nd generation)
  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch
  • iPad Pro 9.7-inch
  • iPad (6th generation)
  • iPad (7th generation)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation)

As you have mentioned not to include the iPad mini and the expensive line up, The mini is striked out of the list with the last 2 members of the list that are the latest Pros.

There are not many storage option differences, but since you are a college student 👨‍🎓, and you need to make notes, my recommendation is a an iPad (7th Generation) 128 GB of storage.

also you can rest you hands on any iPad that supports Apple Pencil while writing, but some apps may require a setting to be done for them.

Since you are going to write notes you will need the 1st generation Apple Pencil and not the Smart Keyboard, this iPad is perfect. In the future, if you plan to change your mind to be more focused on typing, you can buy the Smart Keyboard for this iPad. Luckily, this is the only "NON PRO" iPad which supports the Smart Keyboard.

Plus, this iPad boasts a new screen size of 10.2 inches which is a first in the iPad industry. It is also a reasonable size to make notes on.

This iPad is a 2019 model which has its own benefits that are:

  • New iPad, more future software compatibility
  • Easy to find accessories
  • Possibly 1 year free Apple TV+ subscription (Depends on time of purchase and region)

So the perfect iPad for you is the 10.2 inch 7th generation iPad

Always ready to help,

Arnav
